The answer: plan a handoff, not a door-to-door arrival
For a medina stay, the useful plan is not "drive to the riad." It is a handoff plan: reach a vehicle-accessible point, move bags to the property, then decide what happens to the rental car. That distinction matters in both cities. UNESCO describes Marrakech’s medina as a living historic town with a tangle of lanes, while Fez’s protected historic fabric includes the original Fes el-Bali and the later Fes Jedid. 1 2
Before you enter the old quarter, get three answers in writing:
- Vehicle point: the exact pin where a normal car may stop or be left—not only the property’s pedestrian address.
- Luggage handoff: whether someone will meet you, where they will meet you, and whether any porter help is arranged or merely suggested.
- Car plan: the named facility or confirmed accommodation space, how payment works, and what you need to do when you collect the car again.
A gate name, a map label or an online review can help orient you, but none confirms that a particular space is available, included, supervised, or suitable for your rental on your arrival date.
Confirm three details before you enter the city
Ask the property, rather than an aggregator listing, for the car-accessible arrival point. Request a live map pin and ask whether it is a short unloading point, a place where the car may remain, or only the beginning of the walk. Save the reply and its phone number offline before navigation becomes busy.
Next, ask how bags move from that point. A property may offer to meet guests, recommend a porter, or expect guests to walk independently. These are different arrangements. Confirm the expected arrival window, the meeting name or contact number, and whether the route includes steps or a long walk with luggage.
Finally, separate the luggage question from the car question. Ask where the car is expected to stay overnight, whether you need a ticket or receipt, the agreed payment method, whether you can enter and leave during the stay, and what time you can retrieve it. Do not assume that "nearby parking" means a reserved space or an included charge.
You can send this short message before departure:
We will arrive by rental car on [date] at about [time]. Please send the exact vehicle-accessible meeting pin, tell us whether we may unload there, and confirm the walking route for bags. Where should the car stay while we are guests, what should we pay or obtain there, and who should we call if we cannot find the meeting point?
Marrakech: treat a medina address as a walking address
In Marrakech, begin with the assumption that the accommodation address may describe where you sleep, not where the car can reach. The historic medina’s lanes are part of the site’s living urban structure. 1 A smooth arrival comes from using the property’s vehicle pin as the navigation destination, then switching to its walking instructions after the handoff.
Ask the host which of these situations applies:
- Unload and move the car: Confirm where the car goes immediately afterwards and do not block a narrow approach while waiting for an answer.
- Leave the car at a named facility: Verify the facility directly on arrival, including its terms for the length of stay and collection.
- Use accommodation parking: Ask whether the space is on site, requires a reservation, fits your vehicle, and is included or paid separately.
A smaller car can be easier to manoeuvre on ordinary city streets, but it does not make a pedestrian lane appropriate or give a driver permission to use it. For broader driving preparation, read the Morocco driving guide; for a stay choice that prioritises easier vehicle access, compare the Marrakech accommodation areas.
Fez: make the host choose the arrival side
For Fez, avoid the vague question, "Where can I park near the medina?" UNESCO explains that the original town, Fes el-Bali, was followed by Fes Jedid to its west. 2 Your host should therefore identify the useful arrival side or named gate for its location, then provide the car-accessible point from there. Do not choose a gate from a generic list and assume it serves your riad.
Use the orientation map below to compare the name your host gives you with the broader layout. It is useful for checking a gate name and discussing the final handoff, but it is not a live traffic, route, parking-availability or security map. If the property cannot provide a clear car-and-bags plan, choose a more accessible base for the night or keep the vehicle elsewhere and take your bags in separately.

Choose a car plan that fits the stay
| Your stay pattern | A practical default | Confirm before committing |
|---|---|---|
| You will spend full days walking in the medina | Park once outside the pedestrian area and leave the car until departure. | The exact facility, how long you may leave it, payment, receipt, and collection process. |
| You need the car early the next morning | Choose a plan that makes collection straightforward, rather than the closest-looking pin. | Exit or re-entry rules, retrieval time, payment method and whom to contact if the facility is unattended. |
| The car is not useful for the city portion of the trip | Consider returning it before the medina stay or arranging a later collection. | The rental supplier’s written agreement, return/collection location, hours, inspection process and any charges. |
| You want the simplest vehicle access | Stay outside the medina with confirmed accommodation parking, then visit on foot or by local transport. | Whether the space is actually available for your dates and vehicle, and whether it is included in the rate. |
These are alternatives, not a promise that a particular supplier, property or car park will offer them. The plan that works is the one confirmed for your exact dates, vehicle and accommodation.
Parking and rental protection are separate transactions
A parking receipt, an attendant’s help or an accommodation recommendation does not change the rental contract. It does not prove that a damage waiver applies, reduce the contractual excess, release a deposit hold, or replace the steps your rental company requires after damage or theft. Keep the parking record, but use the terms of your rental agreement for insurance, waivers, excesses and incident reporting. The rental-car insurance and deposit guide explains the questions to take to the supplier.
At the car, record the location, entry time, any ticket or receipt, and photographs of the vehicle’s condition. Keep the rental agreement, keys and valuables with you rather than leaving them in sight. The UK government’s Morocco advice notes that petty crime is common in tourist areas, including medina quarters. 3
A calm arrival routine
- Before the old quarter: Save the vehicle pin, the host’s message and a backup contact. Decide who holds the keys while bags are moved.
- At the vehicle point: Check that the plan still matches the place in front of you. If it does not, call the property before following a last-minute suggestion down an unfamiliar lane.
- During the handoff: Confirm the luggage meeting point first. Do not treat a brief unloading stop as permission to leave the car.
- After parking: Keep the ticket or payment record and note the collection instructions. Take the valuables you need for the stay with you.
- Before departure: Reconfirm how to reach the car and allow time for the reverse luggage handoff and rental return inspection.
Documents and booking terms are a separate check
Parking choices do not change rental eligibility. For drivers using a UK licence, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says to carry the 1968 International Driving Permit with the UK licence in Morocco; it also says a Moroccan licence is needed after a stay longer than one year. The same guidance notes that hire companies often set their own driving-experience and higher-age requirements. 3 Those are road-document and supplier-policy questions, not medina parking rules.
If your licence was issued elsewhere, if you have residency or a long stay, or if another driver will collect the car, get the pickup branch’s written answer before booking. US visitors can start with this US-licence rental checklist.
