Start with the meal setting, not a ranking
Meknes works best when the meal follows the shape of the day. El Hedim Square and Bab Mansour form a practical landmark: the Moroccan National Tourism Office describes Bab Mansour on El Hedim Square as the gateway to the Medina. 1 If your plan already ends there after monuments and market streets, a Medina-side lunch or early dinner can keep the day on foot. If you have luggage, a rental car, young children, limited walking tolerance or an onward departure, choose a table outside the old-city core and make arrival and pickup part of the reservation conversation.
This is not a ranked list. The useful distinction is between atmosphere and walking versus arrival and departure control. Meknes’ World Heritage property combines a compact Medina with a separate imperial-city ensemble; UNESCO also notes that its historic urban fabric is vulnerable. 2 That is a reason to avoid treating a map pin as a guarantee of an easy vehicle doorstop or a step-free route.
| If this is your priority | Start by choosing | Confirm before you go |
|---|---|---|
| A meal after Bab Mansour, El Hedim or the Medina | A Medina-side restaurant or riad restaurant | Exact entrance, walking route, booking time and last kitchen order |
| A low-stress meal before a train, driver pickup or long road leg | A newer-city table with a clear road-side meeting point | Car or taxi drop-off, payment method, finish time and pickup point |
| A planned traditional meal rather than a quick stop | A restaurant that accepts a direct reservation | Menu or dishes available, preparation time, total price basis and dietary questions |
| A group with a stroller or reduced mobility | The option that can explain the route from vehicle to table | Steps, surface, toilets, high chairs and whether assistance is possible |
Choose the Medina when the walk is part of the plan
Choose the Medina side when the meal is a pause within sightseeing, not a transport task. It suits travelers who can keep their day flexible, are comfortable following a confirmed walking route and would rather return to the square or their nearby accommodation on foot. The tourism office’s orientation places Bab Mansour and El Hedim at the Medina gateway, which is more useful than searching for a vague “best restaurant near me.” 1
The trade-off is operational. Ask for the name of the nearest gate or square, the address as the restaurant wants it used, and the latest time the kitchen will take an order. A restaurant may be open while its kitchen is between services, or a terrace may not be in use. For a sunset or dinner booking, agree where a taxi or driver should collect you before the meal. Do not count on finding a particular car at a particular time, and do not drive after drinking.
The supporting photograph below shows a Medina lane photographed in 2010, not a restaurant or a statement about present-day access. It is included to show why an exact walking approach matters more than a straight-line map distance.

Choose the new city when an easy arrival matters more
Choose a restaurant outside the old-city core when the meal needs to fit a vehicle handoff: a hotel transfer, a day trip, a rental-car return or a rail departure. The setting may be less tied to the Bab Mansour visit, but the practical benefits can outweigh that loss of atmosphere. Ask the restaurant whether it can name a usable drop-off point rather than asking only whether it is “near the Medina.”
This is also the conservative choice for travelers who do not want an uncertain walk after dark. It does not mean that every newer-city restaurant has parking, step-free access, English-language service, card payment or a family policy. Those are business-specific questions. If your itinerary includes the Roman site, keep the meal separate from the visit and use this Volubilis planning guide to allow for the road leg and a confirmed return.
Two currently evidenced places to contact
The following are not rankings or endorsements. They are examples with direct, current operating evidence that can be used as a starting point for a call or message. Verify the details again before travel.
Riad Yacout restaurant: a reservation conversation near Place Lalla Aouda
Riad Yacout publishes a restaurant page naming its terrace, Moroccan lounge and patio restaurant, and gives its address as 22 Place Lalla Aouda, Meknès, with telephone and email contact. It lists couscous, tajines and pastillas as menu staples. 3 It does not publish service hours, prices, alcohol information, child arrangements, accessibility detail or a dress code on the page opened for this guide. Contact it directly with your preferred time, number of diners, dietary requirements and vehicle or walking approach before building the day around it.
Restaurant Lahboul Tafilalet: a later-day option to reconfirm
In a recent post from its own account, Restaurant Lahboul Tafilalet identifies itself as being in Meknes, gives a telephone number and email address, and says it is open daily from 10:00 to 23:00. The post also says vegetarian options are available and lists Moroccan dishes alongside pizza and tacos. 4 That is useful operating evidence, not a guarantee: confirm the date’s hours, exact location, menu availability, reservation need and payment options directly. “Vegetarian options” does not establish a fully vegetarian kitchen or allergy-safe preparation.
No reliable public menu or fixed price list was found on the direct pages opened for these two examples. Ask for the current menu, whether prices are per person or per dish, what is included, and whether a reservation has a deposit or cancellation condition.
Questions that prevent a bad dinner plan
Send one short message before you commit to a table:
- Are you serving food at [time] on [date], and what is the last food order?
- Is a reservation required, and is there a deposit, cancellation rule or minimum spend?
- What is the exact entrance or vehicle drop-off point?
- Can you confirm the current menu and price range, including water, bread, service or other additions?
- Can you accommodate this dietary request? State that it is a preference, vegetarian requirement or allergy rather than assuming a menu label answers all three.
- Do you serve alcohol? If that matters to your group, ask rather than inferring it from the setting. Plan a non-driving return if anyone drinks.
- Are there steps from drop-off to table, and are children, strollers or mobility aids workable for this particular seating area?
There is no citywide restaurant dress code, age rule or universal parking arrangement to rely on. Use tidy, context-appropriate clothing and ask the restaurant about any house rule. For broader clothing planning, see what to wear in Morocco.
Build the meal into a Meknes day
For a sightseeing-led day, visit the Medina and imperial-city sights first, then choose an early table close to the El Hedim/Bab Mansour area only after confirming the route back to your accommodation. For a road-led day, finish Volubilis or another out-of-town stop, return to your lodging to reset, then use a restaurant with a clear taxi or driver meeting point. The choice is less about finding a universally “best” meal and more about not letting a late reservation create an avoidable navigation problem.
If you want help coordinating restaurant contacts, a driver or a time-sensitive rail plan across a wider route, see Maroc Mobility’s Personal Travel Assistant. Restaurants and transport providers set and confirm their own availability, prices and conditions.
The best dinner setting also changes with the base you return to. Where to stay in Meknes compares the Medina, Ville Nouvelle and station-oriented options through arrival and next-day needs.
FAQ
Should I eat in the Medina or the newer part of Meknes?
Choose the Medina side when you want the meal to follow a walking day around Bab Mansour and El Hedim. Choose a newer-city option when you need the simplest vehicle arrival, a fixed pickup or an earlier departure. Confirm the exact route either way.
Are Meknes restaurant hours and prices reliable online?
Treat them as a starting point. The operator-published Lahboul Tafilalet post states 10:00–23:00 daily, while Riad Yacout’s restaurant page gives no hours or prices. 3 4 Contact the business directly for your date and ask about the kitchen’s last order as well as the door hours.
Can I assume a Meknes restaurant serves alcohol or has vegetarian food?
No. Ask the individual restaurant. A post saying that vegetarian options are available does not establish a fully vegetarian kitchen or allergy-safe preparation, and a restaurant setting does not establish an alcohol policy. 4
Is a reservation necessary?
It may be sensible for a specific dinner time, a group, a dietary request or a meal that must fit a driver pickup. Confirm whether the reservation is accepted, whether there is a deposit, and what happens if your sightseeing or road leg runs late.
