Choose the beach by the day you want
The useful question is not simply “which Asilah beach is best?” It is which beach still works after transport, return time and the sea conditions you find that day. This guide assumes you are starting in Asilah and want sand and possible swimming; it is not a real-time surf, water-quality or facilities report. For the medina, murals and rocky seafront, read the separate Asilah visit guide.
| If your priority is | Start with | What must be true before you go |
|---|---|---|
| A short, simple beach break | A sandy beach close to your accommodation or town | You can walk or make a short local ride and return without a fixed pickup |
| A beach half-day away from the centre | Paradise Beach, also labelled Playa de las Cuevas | You have an exact map pin and a return time with a driver |
| More space and a slower outing | Sidi Mghait | You have the road/access confirmed for that day and a dependable return plan |
Town-side sand: choose convenience over a big excursion
This is the sensible option when you have only a few hours, are travelling with people who may want to leave independently, or are pairing beach time with the medina. Ask your host or accommodation for the nearest suitable sandy access for that day, rather than assuming the sea-facing medina walls lead to a swimming beach. Walk the shore first: look for a comfortable entry, the actual wave pattern, any posted information and where you would sit if the wind changes.
It is also the lowest-risk transport choice. You can abandon the plan without being dependent on a driver coming back from a remote stretch of coast. The trade-off is that the beach may feel busier and that the picture can vary greatly by season, time of day and conditions.
Paradise / Playa de las Cuevas: make it a half-day
Paradise Beach is also known as Playa de las Cuevas in a rights-verified Commons record from the Asilah coast. 4 Treat it as an outing rather than a vague taxi request. Before leaving, send the driver the map pin, say whether you want a drop-off only or a fixed collection, and agree where you will wait. “Paradise Beach” is not enough if the driver and passenger mean different access points.
This choice fits travellers who can protect a block of daylight and want a beach visit separate from the town. It does not fit a plan that depends on an unconfirmed late-evening ride back, a particular café being open, or calm water being guaranteed. Bring the basics you need to be comfortable even if seasonal vendors or shade are not there.
Sidi Mghait: plan it as a more remote outing
Morocco’s National Tourism Confederation specifically identifies Sidi Mghait among Asilah’s beaches. 1 That establishes it as a real option to investigate, not proof of today’s swimming conditions, road surface, food service or taxi supply.
Choose Sidi Mghait when the beach itself is the day’s main activity. Confirm the route and final access with your driver on the day, set a collection time before you get out, and keep the driver’s number plus the vehicle details. If that conversation is unclear, choose a closer beach instead. A later beach day is not a reason to accept an uncertain return.

Make the swim decision on the day
A beach can look bright and inviting while waves or currents make it a poor place to enter the water. The World Meteorological Organization’s marine-warning service says the underlying warnings and forecasts come from national meteorological services and advises consulting those national authorities as the authoritative source. 2 Check the current marine and weather information before leaving; then let the beach itself decide the final answer.
On arrival, use this order:
- Look before unpacking. Notice wave size, repeated breaking waves, the ease of entry and whether people are being pushed sideways along the shore. Do not use other bathers as a safety signal.
- Ask an on-site professional if one is present. A lifeguard or beach patrol can assess that moment’s local conditions better than a forecast. The U.S. National Weather Service also warns that distant storms can create dangerous waves and currents on a sunny beach. 3
- Follow local direction and posted restrictions. Do not assume flag systems or supervision are identical from one beach to another. If the message is unclear, stay on the sand.
- Choose the cautious alternative. Skip the swim when waves, wind, visibility, currents, a child’s confidence or your own experience make the entry questionable. A shoreline walk, picnic or sunset visit can still be a good beach day.
This approach is especially important with children and weaker swimmers. Keep them within immediate reach in the shallows only when the conditions and local guidance genuinely support it; inflatable toys do not change the sea state.
Arrange transport so you are not stranded
For beaches outside walking distance, agree the following before the outbound journey begins:
- the exact map pin or a screenshot of the entrance;
- whether the driver waits, returns at a fixed time or expects a call;
- the pickup landmark if the beach has more than one access point;
- the price, currency and payment method for the complete journey;
- the driver’s phone number and a backup way to contact them;
- the latest time you are willing to leave if the beach is farther from town.
Do not build the schedule around an advertised journey time. Roadworks, the final approach, traffic and a stop for supplies can change it. If you are coming from Tangier rather than sleeping in Asilah, first work through the train-or-road and last-mile choices in the forthcoming Tangier to Asilah transport guide; a beach day needs more buffer than a medina walk.
Pack for a beach with uncertain facilities
A small self-sufficient bag makes your day less dependent on seasonal setups. Take drinking water, sun protection, a wind layer, a towel, footwear you can use on uneven or hot ground, a charged phone and enough cash for the plan you have agreed. Keep an offline map or saved pin. If food, a toilet, shade, loungers or changing space matter to your group, confirm each one on the day rather than treating a listing or old photo as a guarantee.
Use a carry-out bag for your own waste. It is a simple way to avoid leaving the beach worse than you found it, especially when bins or collection are not obvious.
When a beach day is the wrong call
Change the plan if the sea looks unsuitable, the return is unresolved, or the weather makes a long exposed stay unpleasant. Spend the time in Asilah’s medina instead, return to the beach near sunset only to walk if conditions allow, or leave the beach for a day when you can start earlier and keep a margin for getting back. The goal is not to force a swim because the itinerary says “beach.”
