# Can You Rent a Car in Morocco With a US Licence? Published: 2026-10-30T17:22:46Z Last updated: 2026-10-30T17:22:46Z ## Quick answer Usually, yes: Morocco’s official consular guidance allows a foreign national to drive with a valid foreign licence for up to one year from the start of a temporary stay. But that is not a promise that every rental supplier will release a car. Before paying, get the pickup branch to confirm your original U.S. licence, any IDP requirement, age, licence-history and named-card rules in writing. ## Key takeaways - A valid foreign licence is the legal starting point for a temporary visitor; the rental contract adds its own eligibility tests. - An International Driving Permit is not a substitute for your physical U.S. licence. Ask the actual pickup branch whether it requires one for your booking. - Age, how long you have held a licence, acceptable card type and the cardholder’s name vary by supplier and sometimes by vehicle class. - Keep insurance and card-hold questions separate from licence eligibility; a damage waiver does not make a rejected document or card acceptable. ## The short answer for U.S. visitors **Yes, a U.S. visitor can usually rent and drive in Morocco, provided the original licence is valid and the rental supplier accepts the booking.** Morocco’s official consular guidance says that a person of foreign nationality may drive with a valid licence issued abroad for up to **one year** from the start of a temporary stay. That is the road-law starting point, not a guarantee of rental-counter eligibility. [1] For a normal holiday, treat the decision as two separate checks: 1. **Can you lawfully drive as a temporary foreign visitor?** A valid foreign licence is recognised within the one-year limit. [1] 2. **Will this supplier release this vehicle to you?** The branch can apply its own rules on age, how long you have held a licence, an IDP, the physical payment card and the security hold. This guide is for a U.S.-licensed visitor on a temporary stay. If you are moving to Morocco, remaining beyond the foreign-licence period, or your licence has restrictions, do not rely on this visitor checklist alone. ## Know which rule you are checking | Question | Who sets it? | What to confirm before you pay | | --- | --- | --- | | Can a temporary foreign visitor drive? | Moroccan law | Your U.S. licence is valid, matches the vehicle category and your stay is within the foreign-licence period. | | Is an IDP needed at collection? | The supplier, and potentially its reading of the rules | Whether the exact branch will accept your physical U.S. licence alone or wants an IDP as well. | | Minimum age and licence history | Supplier | The rule for **your** vehicle class and every named driver. | | Card, deposit and booking name | Supplier and card issuer | Accepted physical card type, lead-cardholder requirement and enough available credit for the hold. | | Damage protection and excess | Rental contract | What a waiver changes, what it excludes and what amount can still be held or charged. | That division matters. A foreign licence can be legally valid while a booking still fails because the renter is below the supplier’s age threshold, cannot show enough licence history, or presents a card in somebody else’s name. ## Do you need an International Driving Permit? Do not make a blanket assumption either way. Morocco’s official consular page recognises both a valid foreign licence for a temporary foreign visitor and an international driving licence held by a foreigner; its foreign-licence section does not give a U.S.-specific rental-counter rule. [1] The U.S. Department of State makes the practical point: some countries accept a U.S. licence, while many require an International Driving Permit (IDP). It advises Americans who need an IDP to obtain it from AAA or AATA **before the trip** and to carry the U.S. licence too. [2] An IDP is supporting documentation, not a replacement driving licence. Take both documents if your supplier requires or recommends an IDP. Do not rely on a digital licence, a scan, or an IDP by itself at pickup. There is a concrete reason to ask rather than infer from another traveller’s experience. Avis Morocco says an international driving licence supports a licence written in a non-Roman alphabet; its published terms otherwise require a valid licence from the driver’s country of residence. Hertz Morocco’s published terms use stricter wording for non-EU renters, saying the licence should be international. [3] [4] A U.S. licence uses the Roman alphabet, but the Hertz wording still makes a written response from the branch the safer answer for a U.S. booking. ## Age and licence-history rules are supplier policies There is no single “Morocco rental age.” Current supplier terms illustrate why. Avis Morocco lists a minimum age of **23** for the primary and additional driver, and says the licence must have been held for at least **two years**. [3] Hertz Morocco lists **21 plus one year of licence** for many vehicle classes, then **23 plus two years** for other classes. [4] Those are examples, not a market-wide promise. The vehicle class, local station and any young-driver conditions can change the outcome. If the date printed on your current U.S. card is recent but you have held an earlier licence, ask what proof the branch accepts. Avis, for example, says it may accept a previous licence or a letter from the licensing authority where the card does not show the required history. [3] Every extra driver needs checking too. At Avis, an additional driver must meet the same age and licence conditions as the primary renter. [3] Do not assume a partner can take a turn simply because they have a licence; have them added to the agreement. ## The payment card can stop an otherwise valid booking A card used to reserve online is not automatically enough at collection. Avis Morocco says the credit or debit card must be in the primary renter’s name, valid at check-in and have sufficient funds for the deposit; it also says the card used at pickup should be the one used for the booking. [3] Hertz Morocco similarly says the card used for the authorization must be in the holder’s name. [4] So the lead driver should carry the **physical** accepted card in the same name as the licence, passport and reservation. Ask specifically about debit, prepaid, virtual and app-only cards rather than assuming the logo is enough. A companion’s card may be useful for trip spending but may not satisfy the lead-renter condition. A card hold is not the same as insurance. For example, Avis describes CDW as a waiver that can limit liability to a non-waivable excess, while separately preauthorising a deposit on the renter’s card. [3] If this is the part of the quote you need to compare, read our separate guide to [Morocco car-rental insurance, deposits and card holds](/blog/morocco-car-rental-insurance-deposit-card-holds). ## Send this message to the pickup branch Do this before choosing a non-refundable rate. Send the message to the branch or supplier named on the booking voucher, keep its reply, and make the subject line include your reservation number. > I am a U.S. visitor on a temporary stay in Morocco. I will present my original valid [state] driver licence, issued [month/year], passport, and [IDP if applicable]. Please confirm in writing that this is accepted for reservation [number] at [branch] on [date]. Also confirm: (1) the minimum age and licence-history rule for my vehicle class; (2) whether an IDP is required; (3) which physical card types you accept and whether it must be in the lead driver’s name; (4) the deposit authorization and any other mandatory counter charges; and (5) whether every additional driver must attend with their documents. A useful reply answers all five points, identifies the location and vehicle class, and does not merely say “documents required.” If the answer conflicts with the website, ask the branch to clarify before you cancel another transport plan. Keep the reply with the voucher, but understand that the signed rental agreement at collection still controls the rental. ## Pack a document set the counter can verify Bring originals and make sure the names line up: - Your unexpired physical U.S. driver licence, valid for the whole rental. - Your passport. - An IDP **only if** the supplier requires or you choose to carry one; bring it alongside the U.S. licence. - Evidence of earlier driving history if the issue date on the current card could fail the supplier’s minimum. - The reservation voucher and the branch’s written confirmation. - The lead driver’s accepted physical payment card, with sufficient available funds for the supplier’s authorization. - Each additional driver’s licence, passport and any documents the supplier has requested. At the desk, compare the name on the agreement with the card and licence before signing. It also does not turn a damage waiver into full insurance, remove an excess, or guarantee that a car is suitable for a particular route. If your route is still undecided, Maroc Mobility’s [Personal Travel Assistant](/services) can help with trip planning and provider questions; the rental contract, vehicle availability and supplier rules remain with the independent provider. The official Moroccan consular guidance says a foreign national may drive with a valid foreign licence during a temporary stay of up to one year, and it separately explains use of an international driving licence. [1] It does not provide a U.S.-specific statement that settles every rental counter’s IDP policy. Get the exact branch’s requirement in writing, and carry your original U.S. licence in all cases. ### Can a 21-year-old rent a car in Morocco? Possibly, but only where the supplier and vehicle class allow it. Hertz Morocco lists 21 plus one year of licence for many classes, while Avis Morocco’s published terms set 23 as the minimum for primary and additional drivers. [3] [4] Check the specific vehicle, not a generic search result. ### Can someone else use their card for my rental? Do not assume so. Avis Morocco requires the card to be in the primary renter’s name, and Hertz Morocco says the card used for the authorization must be in the holder’s name. [3] [4] Ask the supplier before booking if the lead driver cannot present an accepted card in their own name. ## Sources 1.
